A whole range of factors must be taken into account when selecting the right material:

Field of application and installation

  • If the component comes into contact with aggressive media such as acids or solvents This includes, for example, human sweat or sunscreen.
  • Is the component exposed to sunlight or other extreme environmental pollution? For example, sterilization by gamma rays. Does the component have to be bonded? A whole range of non-polar plastics can only be bonded very poorly or with appropriate pretreatment.
  • The application area usually also defines the minimum and maximum application temperature.

Mechanical load

The following factors, among others, must be taken into account when mechanically stressing the components.

  • Strength
  • Stiffness
  • Hardness
  • Toughness

Optical and electrical requirements

  • Does the component have to be optically transparent or opaque?
  • Must certain wavelength ranges be blocked or transmitted?
  • Does the component have to be specially insulating or even electrically conductive?
  • What color must/may the component have?

Compliance requirements

  • Must the material have certain medical approvals, for example USP Class VI?
  • Are fire safety regulations to be observed?

Injex supports you with the selection

Once all these requirements have been defined, the right material can usually be found quickly. And if the requirement profiles are particularly difficult, we can draw on our network of experienced material specialists to find the right solution.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating: Material tests

Sometimes it is not possible to find the optimal material from the data sheet. With the flexible and inexpensive injection moulding tools from Injex it is therefore possible to quickly test different materials and compare them with each other in a functional test.
